Circuit judges are trial judges, and David has made his career in the courtroom. As both a former Assistant State’s Attorney and Public Defender, he has invaluable trial experience on both sides of complex cases. That kind of hands-on trial and courtroom experience can’t be obtained in the corporate sector. With over 170 trials, 26 jury trials, and over a thousand more hearings on a multitude of legal issues.
David currently runs a busy courtroom practice handling criminal defense, civil rights, personal injury and family law. The majority of his practice is in DuPage County, but he has additionally represented clients in over 40 courthouses across Northern Illinois in front of hundreds of judges. David has the broad courtroom experience that allows him to roll up his sleeves and get to work from day one delivering fair and impartial justice to the people of DuPage County.
David is endorsed by DuPage NOW and the United Hellenic Voters of America.
As a proud Democrat, David has worked tirelessly to support local and national candidates on everything from grassroots efforts to providing pro bono legal advice. He served as a Democratic Precinct Committeeman and has represented candidates in getting on and staying on the ballot, which included the successful defense of a candidate's petition objection and subsequent appeal. Further, he has served as on-call counsel during elections and has volunteered to make sure all votes are counted.
Before attending law school, David was a third-generation union member as a public school teacher and IEANEA member. Both of David’s grandfathers were AFL-CIO-P9 Meatpackers. His father was a Chrysler line worker and a member of 1268 UAW. His mother was a public school teacher and BEA/IEANEA member from 1988 to 2005.
David regularly represents indigent victims of domestic abuse in court at no charge. He is the Chair of Continuing Legal Education for American Inns of Court, DuPage Chapter, an invitation-only association of attorneys and judges. He also mentors young attorneys through the DuPage Bar.
As a former teacher, David has continued his passion for public education. For many years, he has been a volunteer judge for middle school, high school, college and law school Mock Trial programs. He is an evaluator and mentor for the College of DuPage Paralegal program, and was instrumental in the creation of the SMILE project, a paid internship mentoring program for at-risk high school students.
David’s wife of 24 years, Marium Khan Stevens, is an ethics attorney who is a pro bono advocate for women and children fleeing violence and seeking asylum in the US. They live in Naperville with their two children, who attend District 203 schools.
